THE release earlier last month of a special set of stamps to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was a special day for Worcester, as one of the images chosen showed her on a walkabout in April 1980.
Elizabeth II marked her 70th anniversary on the throne on Sunday, February 6, as she becomes the first British sovereign in history to reach such a milestone.
We asked readers if they featured on the stamp in the background – a request which prompted Sally Hunt-Williams to get in touch via our We grew up in Worcester page on Facebook.
Sally shared a picture taken during the visit of the Queen meeting children from Worcester’s schools in the Guildhall which showed her – a picture of concentration as she presented Her Majesty with a posy of hand-picked flowers.
She said: “I’m pretty sure that two children from each primary school had been invited to the event. I was ‘representing’ St Joseph’s Warndon with my mate Bridget, sat to my right.”
Other readers who weren’t on the stamps but were there on the day included Pauline Makepeace.
She wrote: “What an honour to be on one of the stamps (we are the faithful City after all). I was there in 1980 , by Russell and Bromley’s shoe shop , opposite the Guildhall with my two children , my sister and her two children and two grandmas.
“I went to see her in 2012 with my mum and son we stood at the top of Pump Street waiting for her to come out of the Guildhall. We were shouting God save the Queen to drown out the protestors who stood right by us!”
Shirley Baddeley was also there in 1980, waiting outside M&S for a glimpse of the Queen.
Do you have any memories or pictures from any of the Queen’s visits to Worcester? Perhaps you have a picture where a family member was introduced to the monarch. You can post them here on our We grew up in Worcester page on Facebook or send them to barry.kinghorn@newsquest.co.uk.
