OPPOSITION at a renewed effort to build a care home on the edge of the city has already started to grow.

The controversial plan would see a 70-bed care home built on land known as the ‘Donkey Field’ off Northwick Road in Worcester and comes less than a year after an 80-bed plan was rejected by the council.

The plan proved controversial when it was first submitted at the end of 2020 and a petition with more than 1,100 signatures and more than 160 objections were lodged with the district council before a decision was made.

More than 30 objections have already been submitted to Wychavon District Council by residents who want to see the land protected.

Objecting to the plan, Adam Warren of Northwick Road, said: “This is essentially the same application that was rejected just a few months ago, and I fail to see how a reduction from 80 to 70 bedrooms makes any significant difference - it is still a very large care home.”

Paul Amos, also of Northwick Road, said: “I strongly oppose this proposed plan. This piece of land is a valuable public amenity, the last piece of rural land left on the west side of Northwick Road. The last opportunity for residents to enjoy a well-established view down the flats and across the river.

“In addition, the parking and increased traffic use will denigrate a quiet area well used by cyclists and dog walkers alike.”

Also objecting, Amanda Johnson of Ivy Crescent in Bevere said: “The area is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary, backing onto the river and surrounding fields.

“Local residents really value this undeveloped space.

“There is significant development already surrounding this area and little remaining green space in such a beautiful area. Is there a need for a large residential care with the increase in staff traffic and cars?”

A plan for a 74-bed care home on the remaining part of the former park and ride site in John Comyn Drive off Droitwich Road, less than a mile away from Old Northwick Farm, was approved by Worcester City Council in 2020.

The plans can be viewed via the planning section of Wychavon District Council’s website.

The application number is W/22/00227/OUT and public consultation ends on March 3.
