A bungling drug dealer who used his own car to sell cocaine in a public place has been jailed for three years.

Robert Rudge was spotted by a police patrol handing over cocaine in Droitwich Lido's car park. The 18-year-old customer was arrested as he left the scene and Rudge's address traced through his car registration, Worcester Crown Court heard.

When his home was raided, officers found cocaine with a street value of £280 and 21 plastic bags used for containing drug deals.

Rudge, aged 38, of Shepherd's Hill, Droitwich, pleaded guilty to supplying cocaine and possession with intent to supply.

Judge John Cavell said he regarded him as a commercial dealer on a modest scale.

He had been caught red-handed on April 28 last year as he sold cocaine worth about £40 through his car window.

Alex Warren, prosecuting, said Rudge had been a cocaine user for two years. He began after his marriage broke up and there were contact problems over his children.

He denied dealing at first, claiming drugs at his home were for his own use. Electronic scales were also seized.

Rudge had acted with "extreme stupidity", said his barrister Simon Phillips.

"He used his own car. You couldn't think of a more naive thing to do in a public area.

"The buyer even gave police his details," he added.

Rudge had no previous convictions and had been a hard worker ever since he left school. He bought drugs in bulk which he occasionally supplied to a few friends Mr Phillips asked for consideration to be given to a suspended jail sentence, but the judge said the Court of Appeal would overturn such a lenient penalty under its guidelines.
