A FOOD shop hit with a lowly one star food hygiene rating has reportedly left a Lowesmoor shop and won't be reopening to the public.
AK General Food was given the rating, the second lowest, by Worcestershire Regulatory Services inspectors on January 7.
A report into the venue, that advertised itself as being a Halal butcher's and wholesalers, reveals that "major improvement' was necessary in the management of food safety - which looks at the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
Inspectors found that in the category of cleanliness and condition of facilities and building standards was good, while in the category of hygienic food handling standards were found to be generally satisfactory.
A spokesman for AK General Food told us the shop was no longer at the Lowesmoor premises where the inspection had taken place as there had been an issue with the lease.
They added there was no AK General Food sign put up at the premises during the few months they were based there, with the former occupiers, ROJ Halal Butchers, frontage still there.
AK General Food was based at this address in Lowesmoor, but the signage was never changed
The spokesman said: "AK General Food has closed down, we left last week and we are not using those premises anymore - we are looking for new ones.
"When the inspection happened we were new, the shop was clean. The only thing lacking was the paper work."
The spokesman added they wanted to ensure they get a higher rating when they reopen at a new location.
AK General Foods Ltd is still listed on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website and joins the growing list of one star rated food businesses in the city which includes Age UK Worcester And District Lunch Club in Bilford Court, Lifestyle Express in Kilbury Drive, The Admiral Rodney At Berrow Green in Martley, Your's Pizza Bite / Little India in Ronkswood Hill, Happy Taste in Orchard Street and O Nosso Cafe in London Road.
If managers disagree with a rating, or believe their business has been upgraded since receiving the rating listed on the FSA website, food.gov.uk, they should contact the FSA directly.
All information published is based on results on the FSA website, food.gov.uk, and is correct as of February 4, 2022, with inspections listed as the latest carried out.
