HYLTON Road in Worcester has been closed due to flooding and could remain shut for the next 24 hours.

Worcestershire County Council said it has taken the decision to temporarily close the road - between the junction with Henwick Road and the junction with Tybridge Street - as a precautionary measure.

As well as the significant volume of water being contained by the flood barriers, water is gushing onto the street from drains and there are reports of water seeping from underneath the barrier.

The road is still open to local residents and businesses but members of the public are being advised not to use the road unless absolutely necessary.

Diversions and shuttle bus services will be in place during the temporary closure and West Mercia police will be on hand to advise to residents and businesses.

While the flood warnings from the Environment Agency are no longer severe - and the river Severn has peaked at 5.39 metres - warnings for the Severn through the whole of Worcestershire still remain.

Utility works along Bath Road have been suspended by the County Council in a bid to minimise disruption.

For now, residents are being advised to: - Plan ahead and leave plenty of time for their journey.

- Use their common sense and not attempt to drive through flooded roads or fords. The water is often deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast. Vehicles can be swept away or become stranded.

- Do not attempt to walk through flooded area. Even shallow water moving fast can sweep people off their feet. There may also be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris or deep channels.
