RESIDENTS in Bewdley are being warned that a surge of flood water could reach the town tonight.

After a weekend of heavy rain over the mountains in Wales, water is heading down the Severn towards the town with experts predicting it will peak at about 2am.

An Environment Agency spokesman said the barriers in Severnside North and Beales Corner should hold the water but warned people to be on their guard.

"We have just issued a severe flood warning on the river Severn at Bewdley," he said.

"At the moment the impact will generally be on the the roads and just a few properties.

"We are expecting it to peak overnight about 2am at about 4.6 metres. We have put this warning out as soon as possible and we are monitoring the situation."

Police said the B4194 between Bewdley and Stourport was closed due to flooding this morning, and is likely to remain shut for several days.

Roadworks are also causing some disruption in the town centre and Sergeant Chris Aimes of Bewdley Police advised motorists to use Bewdley Bypass if possible unless they need to go into the town. However, people are being told shops and businesses are open as normal.
