RESIDENTS are being warned to stay on their guard as river levels in Worcestershire are set to rise again.

The Environment Agency said although the river Severn has been slowly falling over the last few days heavy rainfall over the mountains in Wales will mean the river Severn will be affected at Bewdley, Worcester and Upton-upon-Severn.

Flood defence barriers remain at all three locations and the river Severn is still on Flood Warning.

Agency spokeswoman Lyn Fraley said: "Rain over the Welsh mountains Saturday night will lead to rising river levels over the next 24 hours. We are monitoring the situation closely. We have got all of our barriers up at the moment and the Environment Agency is warning people to be prepared because the Met Office has predicted heavy rainfall over the next few days."

However, Mrs Fraley said lenghty dry spells over the course of the weekend had helped to stabalise river levels across the county.

"Worcester and Diglis are both stable, it is falling at Powick, and Evesham is stable," she said. "However, our teams have said they are expecting them to rise over the next 24 hours. People do need to be alert to this."

She urged people to keep up-to-date with local weather reports and listen to any advice issued by the Environment Agency.
