A RECORD-breaking day for covid booster jabs saw over 1,000 people vaccinated at Worcester Racecourse.
It comes as the first case of Omicron in Worcestershire and the first UK death to the variant has been confirmed by Public Health England.
Dr Kathryn Cobain, director of Public Health for Worcestershire, said the case was "quickly identified".
Queues of over an hour built up as lines of just under 200 people stretched from the Grandstand to Sabrina Bridge the morning after a national address by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Mr Johnson announced everyone eligible aged 18 and over in England will have the chance to get their booster before the New Year in the light of a worrying increase in the number of Omicron cases.
Hundreds patiently waited to be jabbed in hour long queues with the number vaccinated today (Monday) 20 per cent higher than Worcester City PCN's previous biggest ever single day event.
David McDowell, patient quality manager at Worcester City PCN: "We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved today at Worcester Racecourse—our biggest ever single day, with well over 1,000 local residents boosted since 9am.
"We have to give enormous credit to our staff, volunteers, and our local GP practices, who’ve been instrumental in delivering the vaccine rollout via our PCN.
"Today they’ve gone the extra mile, with staff from surgeries across the city driving around to source extra equipment, and nursing staff from a number of practices delivering vaccines at incredibly short notice.
“Our patients have also been fantastic—queueing without complaint, and offering their support and encouragement to our staff.
"Well over a year into the vaccine rollout, it’s interactions like this that really keep us going—especially as we stand up to deliver our biggest challenge yet.
"So thank you to everyone who’s come through today—and we look forward to offering even more vaccination services across Worcester City in the coming weeks.”
Worcester Racecourse will be reopening for covid-walk ins tomorrow (Tuesday).
There will also be extremely limited walk-ins at University of Worcester in Castle Street which is in the process of being turned into a bookable site to run five or six days a week.
