THE first case of Omicron in Worcestershire has been confirmed by Public Health England.
Dr Kathryn Cobain, director of Public Health for Worcestershire, said the case had been "quickly identified".
In a statement Dr Cobain said: "There has been one confirmed positive case of the omicron variant in Worcestershire, which was quickly identified. The case and contacts have followed public health guidance and present no further risks of spreading the virus.
"We continue to advise any residents with Covid-19 symptoms to take a PCR test as soon as possible."
Dr Cobain added that Delta remained the dominant variant in Worcestershire.
No other cases have yet been confirmed in the county.
Earlier today Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed there had been a death of person with the Omicron variant.
That news followed a broadcast pre recorded statement from the PM to the nation, urging people to get boosted last night.
And Health Secretary Sajid Javid has warned the variant is spreading at a rate "that we've never seen before".
The government announced the implementation of Plan B in response to the variant last week, with people told to work from home from today (December 13).
