A GOOD samaritan went to the aid of an assault victim found lying unconcious in a Worcester street.

However, the kind-hearted person left without being identified and police are now trying to trace them in the hope they can shed some light on how the victim was attacked.

A police spokesman said: "This public-spirited stranger may also have been a witness - or at least have important information that might help in identifying the attacker, or attackers.

"The victim woke up in the Accident and Emergency Department of Worcestershire Royal Hospital with facial and head injuries, but does not know how he got there and believes someone came to his aid and called the emergency services."

The incident occurred in, or near to, Mecco Alley as the victim walked from Sanctuary Close, Dines Green, to Happy Land North, St John's, about 10.30pm on Monday, January 14. An ambulance was called about this time by what is believed to be a man.

The spokesman said: "We would like to hear from the caller for two reasons: to see if he can further our enquiries and so that both we - and the victim - can formally thank him for his public-spiritedness."

If the caller does want to come forward, he should ring 08457 444888, quoting 177S/180108, and ask for PC Gemma Thomas. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
