A WORCESTER school is riding on the crest of a wave after picking up two top reports - just days after it came top of the city's schools in the GCSE league tables.

Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College has been praised by education watchdog Ofsted, which judged the school as "good" overall with some "outstanding" features.

It also scooped a top report following its latest inspection by the Archdiocese of Birmingham, which described the school as a "a very good school with a number of outstanding features".

Headteacher Sean Devlin said: "I am pleased with the Ofsted report as it picks up on some of the very good things that are happening here. However, it is disappointing that Ofsted dropped the "very good" rating, so now we are just judged as good' with some outstanding' features.

"Some of the differences in the two reports show some of the discrepancies between different inspecting bodies.

"But overall, we are pleased that both of the reports have recognised our achievements."

In the Ofsted report, the inspectors said: "Blessed Edward Oldcorne is a good school, thanks to the careful and caring professionalism of teachers and staff. Immediately apparent to visitors, including inspectors, is the warm and friendly ethos evident in enthusiastic conversations between staff, visitors and pupils.

"The clear call of the Gospel to value every individual in the school was exemplified by morning prayers shared with all staff, setting the tone for the day, and reminding staff of their duty of care and consideration."

The school scooped top place in Worcester in this year's GCSE league tables with 80 per cent of students achieving five or more A* to C grades.

The inspectors said: "The good overall achievement of pupils is evident in at least above, and sometimes well above, average performance measures at Key Stage 4."

In the diocesan report, inspectors said the school has "a caring atmosphere". They said: "Behaviour and relationships in school are good. Pupils feel safe, secure and happy and relate well to one another.

"The leadership of the headteacher is outstanding reflecting a deeply held vocation to Catholic education and commitment to faith in action."
