The pilot who has been hailed a hero for safely crash-landing a Boeing 777 lives in Worcester.

The British Airways captain Peter Burkill lives with his wife and three sons in the city.

He was at the controls of the BA jet which crash-landed short of the runway at Heathrow yesterday.

After the landing 136 passengers and 16 crew members were evacuated in a major operation. Thirteen people were treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who by coincidence was at the airport and saw the aftermath of the incident, has praised the crew for their professionalism during the emergency.

Investigations are underway to find the cause of the near-disaster, with the main theory thought to be total engine failure.
