AN INNOVATIVE project for Worcestershire youngsters with learning difficulties has scooped a national award.
New self-guided trails and a living sculpture' have been created at the historic Witley Court and gardens, near Worcester, by 35 youngsters from the Wyre Forest LAFS (Learn, Achieve, Fun, Socialise) and Worcestershire Lifelinks groups.
Now Worcestershire County Council's LAFS @ Witley Court initiative has won the prestigious innovative partnership prize at the Care Services Improvement Partnership awards at a presentation evening in London.
Some of the youngsters went to County Hall to hear their efforts explained at a full council meeting.
"The group has been working really hard at Witley Court," the council's chairman, councillor John Smith, told the meeting.
"I'm extremely pleased to announced they've won this national award."
The project was funded by a £25,000 lottery grant in 2006. The youngsters were aiming to develop a series of trails looking at the birds, wildlife, plants and trees living in the wilderness garden and along the woodland walks surrounding the spectacular English Heritage-owned ruin in Great Witley.
They also aimed to encourage different species through creating new habitats and bird boxes, as well as building a sculpture inspired by the landscape.
