WE received a letter last week calling for the council to invest money in an up-to-date skate park.
A more direct call to action went up 46 years ago from Worcester’s youngsters who wanted something to do. Specifically, they wanted a roller-skating rink.
So, spearheaded by a petition initiated by Christopher Whitehead Girls School pupils, enough support was drummed up to get the city council to commit to build one on Pitchcroft, provided the youngsters raised £2,000 towards the costs. Which, to their credit, they did. And so it was that three short years later, in 1978, the roller-skating rink opened to much fanfare.
Sadly, within months, there were already headlines questioning the wisdom of an under-used “white elephant”.
Do you remember the campaign to get the roller skating rink? Perhaps you were involved in the drive to get it built. We'd love to hear your memories – it could even be about the bumps and bruises – or see any pictures you may have. You can email barry.kinghorn@newsquest.co.uk
