WORCESTERSHIRE residents heading north of the country today are being warned to expect severe delays.
The M6 northbound in Warwickshire is closed between J2 (Coventry) and J4 (Birmingham Airport) for emergency gantry repairs, National Highways has said.
The advice is currently to plan ahead, though some "may wish to re-route or even delay your journey".
National Highways says it has specialist teams working at site to assess the structure and make the area safe.
A National Highways spokesman said: "We're working hard to carry out this work as safely and as quickly as we can and we need to keep the road closed while we carry out these specialist assessments.
"We’d like to encourage motorists to leave additional time for their journeys if travelling through this part of the network while the diversion route is in place. This work is expected to be complex and the closure is likely to remain in place throughout the day.
"Severe delays are expected on the approach to the closure during this mornings peak travel period."
A diversion route is in place, with drivers urged to use the hollow circle diversion symbol.
The route advises to exit the M6 at J2 and join the A46 southbound, Coventry Eastern Bypass.
Continue along the A46 to its junction with the A45, Tollbar End Roundabout, then take the exit to the A45 westbound (Stonebridge Highway).
Motorists should then continue on along the A45 westbound to its junction with the A452, Stonebridge Roundabout, and take the exit onto the A452 northbound, Chester Road and continue along the A452/A446 to the M6 J4 to resume northbound journeys.
