A family of six were all taken to hospital after a crash which closed the M5 southbound for over an hour in Worcestershire.
West Midlands Ambulance Service crews sent to the scene found a people carrier which had been in collision with a lorry on the motorway.
The driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle for an hour and 10 minutes, with paramedics and a doctor treating him throughout the incident, which happened at 8pm yesterday between junctions seven and eight.
His wife and four children, who were travelling in the back of the car, were shaken up.
A spokesman from the ambulance service said: "It was very, very nasty weather while we were trying to look after the man. It was raining very hard throughout.
"The husband was driving the car and he was trapped in the vehicle for a long time.
"His wife and four children were travelling in the back of the car and they were all very shaken up. The woman had injuries to her legs and one of the children had hit his head on the front seat in the impact.
"The driver was conscious throughout the incident but had suspected internal injuries and possible pelvic injuries as well.
"We took all six of them to hospital by ambulance. We travelled the wrong way up the motorway with a police escort while it was closed, so we could get to Worcestershire Royal Hospital quickly."
The lorry driver was uninjured.
Three ambulances were sent to the scene along with an Incident Support Officer and a doctor. The police and Hereford and Worcester fire and rescue service also attended.
The motorway was closed southbound to allow the emergency crews to carry out their work.
