Specialist crews have been called to recovered a jackknifed lorry which is in a 'dangerous position' on the M5.

Police completely closed the motorway between J4 and J3 northbound due to a crash which caused the lorry to jackknife earlier this morning, damaging the carriageway in the process.

Dramatic pictures show how the lorry smashed through the crash barrier on the side of the motorway before hitting the verge behind it.

A lampost was also damaged, which police say "could drop onto the carriageway".

Fire crews and highways officers are also trying to tackle a diesal spillage, which is continuing to leak from the lorry onto the carriageway.

Further closures have been put in place at M5 J5 northbound, M42 J1 southbound and M5 J4 & J5 entry slips to ease "trapped traffic".

Officers said the recovery will be a "slow process", but assured motorists they are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue.
