PUPILS at Pitmaston Primary School have been particularly excited over the last few weeks to start using the school’s new Phiz Lab.
The Phiz Lab enables pupils of all ages across the school to carry out experiments, focusing on their scientific enquiry and skills in a real science laboratory.
Headteacher Kate Wilcock said: “Seeing the pupils’ faces when they came into the lab for the first time, wearing their lab coats and goggles for their lesson was magical.
“In the words of the children ‘we are real scientists’!
“I hope this encourages many of our pupils to aspire to be the next generation of scientists.”
Rumi Choudhury-Lancaster, the science lead, said: “The shows how fortunate we are at Pitmaston to have a purpose-built Primary Science Phiz Lab, which will further enhance the quality of teaching and learning for the pupils.”
The school will continue to develop this space, with ideas including a weather station and outdoor working zone as part of the area.
Janinne Delorenzo, of the Ogden Trust and University of Worcester, has worked closely with Pitmaston as well as many other primary schools across the city to develop their practice in physics pedagogy.
She said: “The Phiz Lab will be an inspirational hub for science at the school and also across the partnership – plans are already in place for partnership events to take place, using the lab to bring teachers together to enhance their practice.”
Thanks to funding from the Ogden Trust, the Phiz Lab has been equipped with a super selection of science resources and accessible storage to encourage child-led science investigations.
