FOR many bereaved children, and their parents, the chance to get away for a weekend and not only have fun with the chance to express their feelings is invaluable.
This is one of the key moments, and most memorable experiences for many who are helped by the Worcester-based bereavement charity the Noah's Ark Trust.
For the past ten years, hundreds of children have benefited from the residential weekends held at the Malvern Hills Outdoor Centre, which the charity offers to them. These not only give them the chance to meet others in similar situations, but help them cope with their grief.
Parents also go on the camps and are supported through difficult times - they have time apart to be able to talk to other adults who have also had a significant bereavement.
Noah's Ark Co-ordinator, Diane Gristy said: "There are lots of different reasons for the children and adults being there but it really is amazing the transformation we see in just two days.
"Various activities are introduced to the children, some physical outdoor challenges, some creative and some emotional, which they all respond to in their own way."
Activities, including making memory boxes and colourful salt sculptures, and telling their story, help them explore emotions and remember loved ones. Ms Gristy said: "It can be quite a rollercoaster of emotions. There are sensitive times and fun times. There are lots of layers to this weekend but at the end of it the whole family has forged friendships with volunteers, children or parents who have gone through a similar experience. One of our greatest skills is listening to children and their families, people often don't always listen to how they feel. So this experience is something we are very careful to do.
"To have someone who is interested in listening to you is a tremendous release."
Your Worcester News is running a campaign to help the trust raise £1m to purchase a base - and Ms Gristy believes it will give even bigger support for the children.
She said: "I think it would be a great way for Noah's Ark to move forward."
