THE future of a community hall, wheelie bins and plans to expand Droitwich town centre look set to be the issues that will decide who represents Chawson on the town council.

Three candidates will stand at a by-election, scheduled for Thursday, following the resignation in October of town councillor John Cook due to ill health.

Janet Clarke, a retired export shipping clerk and former town councillor, will stand for the Liberal Democrats.

She said, as a founder member of the Chawson community association, she was keen to find a solution to vandalism at the Emmanuel Church Hall, which was subject to controversy recently over proposals to sell it.

Mrs Clarke said: "I want to help make the Chawson area an area where people can respect it and will get the most out of it. The community hall is an issue. We would like to think that we could get it rebuilt and put back into some respectable order."

Edgar Harwood will stand for the Labour party and he said the community hall was also an issue for him along with wheelie bins.

Mr Harwood, who is a Worcestershire County Councillor and Droitwich's town crier, said: "The wheelie bins are totally inappropriate for the Chawson estate. It hasn't been thought through."

He said he wanted to address concerns over an expansion of Droitwich's town centre and was opposed to plans for a ladieswear store and would prefer to see an ironmonger or greengrocer.

The community hall was also on the agenda of Yuleen Jewell who will stand for the Conservatives and she said as a Wychavon District Councillor she had been active in helping residents oppose the development plan.

She said: "I'm also working with the police to stop Anti-social behaviour, and the car vandalism and drug problems that we are trying to tackle." She is also keen to work towards installing a path along Celvestune Way.
