A young biker was given ‘one final ride along’ as his coffin arrived at the funeral followed by dozens of motorcyclists.

Nick Bennell, aged 35, died following a crash on Bromsgrove Highway on August 18.

The father of two, who lived in both Redditch and Worcester, was escorted to the funeral at Astwood Cemetery by over 30 bikers on Thursday September 23.

The idea for the procession of bikers was that of his sister, Amy Lowes.

In a post on ‘WAC Motorcycle Club’ Facebook page she wrote: “My brother, Nick Bennell was a massive biker and he passed away in motorbike accident at the age of 35 and he would love one final ride along.”

The parade of bikers arrived at the cemetery, just off Astwood Road, at around 3pm with their engines revving for the late member of the biker community.

Nick's coffin led the procession, arriving in a specially designed motorbike hearse with a sidecar.

Manager of the motorcycle club Facebook page, Dawn Thomas, said: "It's a shame that we have to attend these but we tend to view it as sending a 'family' member on one last ride.

"Bikers are a supportive group as seen with Felicity's Prom Ride, the Thursday Bike Meets which raise vital funds to keep the Air Ambulance service going and now with Nick Bennell's funeral.

"It's a time we all come together, on our bikes doing the thing that we love and taking Nick on one last, loud reminder of our good life spent on two wheels."

Darren Burns, a member of Bikers of Worcestershire, attended the funeral parade despite having never met Nick.

He said: "I don't know how he lost his life but the brother hood and sister hood is a strong one, from supporting bullied kids to paying our respects to a fallen rider is always something we come together for and my deepest sympathy goes out to Nicks family. Ride In Peace brother"

Speaking after the crash in August, police said that Nick’s family were grateful to everyone who had extended their sympathies and offered help following the collision.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "They have asked that everyone be told that they have seen all their well-wishes but understandably have not been able to respond to every message.

"The family would also like to highlight all the passers-by and other motorists who stopped in order to help Nick following the collision.

“They are most grateful to everyone who did whatever they could to comfort him and support him while emergency services made their way to the scene.

"Sadly, despite the best efforts of those present, including police and paramedics in attendance, Nick died at the scene of the collision and the family would like to thank the all the emergency services personnel who provided aid to Nick."

A woman in her 40s and from Redditch was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police said.
