It’s Cheeseburger Day and what better way to celebrate than shining a spotlight on the city’s best burgers.
September 18 celebrates the birth of the cheeseburger which supposedly occurred in 1924 when a man called Lionel Sternberger came up with the idea whilst working at his father’s sandwich shop, The Rite Spot in Pasadena, California.
Worcester is fortunate to have more than its fair share of great burger joints.
Here are the five best restaurants serving burgers, according to TripAdvisor.
1. Burger Shop
Where else?
The Cherry Tree Walk restaurant is the city’s number one place for Burgers and has a wide variety to get your teeth stuck into.
Some of their more unique options include the ‘Worcester Blue’, ‘Kimchi Beef’ and the ‘Golden Arches’.
2. Hanbao
The burgers at Hanbao on Foregate Street are probably unlike any you’ve ever seen before.
The ‘Odd Future’ burger stands out in particular, it replaces the buns with glazed doughnuts.
Some of their other creatively-name burgers include ‘Cheezy Duz It’, ‘Piggie Smalls’ and ‘Caesars Palace’.
3. Friar Street Kitchen
Friar Street Kitchen opened in 2017 and has established itself as one of the city’s top restaurants, with a focus on using local, British and Fairtrade produce.
The meat for their signature burgers comes from nearby Knightwick Butchers whilst the brioche buns are provided by Peter Cooks Bread, based in Bishop’s Frome.
Owner Kate Felton-Page said: “It’s been a rough couple of years in our industry as it has for everyone but we’re perfectly supported by wonderful customers and the best suppliers.”
4. Be the Change
Number four on the list offers something a little bit different as it is all vegan.
Co-founder Anthony Chesher said: “Delighted to hear we've been recognised! Even more delighted for the cows.
“This shows that a great cheezeburger can be enjoyed by all...without anyone needing to suffer! Everyone's a winner!”
