A HUSBAND and wife who love music and dancing have raised more than £21,000 for a Worcester charity.
Brian and Philomena Green, well-known across the county for their popular dance events, have donated £21,272 to St Richard's Hospice over the past six years.
The couple, of Westfield Close, Fernhill Heath, held their first fund-raising dance in January 2002. The ball has been rolling ever since.
"We used to do three dances a year in Droitwich," said Mr Green, aged 67. "Then we found there was space for something in Worcester. I guess we took the bull by the horns and went for it."
A DJ since 1973, Mr Green provides the music, whlie Mrs Green, also aged 67, welcomes people through the doors and organises the ballroom, latin and sequence dancing.
"Philomena loves her dancing," said Mr Green. "It's really the perfect partnership."
The dances are held at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Droitwich, Powick Parish Hall in Powick, near Worcester, as well as St John's Sports Centre, in Swanpool Walk, St John's, Worcester.
The latter is due to be knocked down and rebuilt as part of the Sainsbury's supermarket development.
Mr and Mrs Green are looking forward to moving to the new venue when it opens later this year. "It's quite an exciting time," said Mr Green.
"We've probably had 10,000 people come to our dances and we've raised £21,272 in total. That averages out at £253 per dance. We look forward to more of the same. It just seems to be snowballing."
Thanking the couple, Tricia Cavell, fund-raising manager for St Richard's, said: "It's a huge amount of money and we really admire the hard work and dedication they've put in.
"We are always grateful and hope that they continue." The hospice has been caring for patients since it was founded by Dr Jenny Bulman from her home in Droitwich in 1984, and provides a growing range of services for patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
In 2006 the charity opened its new hospice in Spetchley, Worcester, which cost £5.2 million. Each year it needs £3.2 million to keep the service running.
