PLANS to build 34 homes in Worcester have run into opposition from parish councillors who say the development will not do enough to help people get on the housing ladder.

Warndon Parish Council does not object in principle to Persimmon Homes building the houses in Dugdale Drive, Warndon Villages, but says the mix of homes will not meet local housing needs.

Parish councillors agreed at a meeting this week that the development had too many large homes and not enough small ones - councillors complained there were 15 four bedroom homes and only eight two bedroom ones in the mix.

They also said the 14 allotments included as part of the development would probably not be used and the "kick-about area" would not be practical because the land, through which a watercourse runs, was too boggy.

Parish council chairman Ray Morris said of the allotment proposal: "This is the last oasis of green space in Warndon Villages - for me, 14 allotments will do nothing for the 8,000 people who live here. Something a bit more inventive could have been done with this area."

Lucy Hodgson, Worcester city councillor for Warndon Parish South, confirmed the application had already been called in for a closer look after she objected to it.

Coun Hodgson said she wanted to see CCTV cameras as part of the developers' contribution to the local community.

A date has not yet been fixed for the application to go before the planning committee, although a planning department spokesman said it would not be before the end of January.

A spokesman for Persimmon Homes said: "The application was subject to a public consultation exercise prior to submission and has been extensively discussed with the local planning authority.

"The development includes a wide mix of properties, with half two and three-bedroom houses and only a handful of four-bedroom family homes.

"The planning package also includes 14 allotments, an area of public open space and an ecological enhancement. The location, size and timing of these provisions have been discussed and agreed with the council."

Planning officers have yet to recommend whether to approve or refuse the application.
