THIS will be how the central square of Droitwich's Salters shopping centre will look when current building work is completed.

Developers released the image as construction of a glass and steel coffee shop, which will be run by Muffin Break, got underway.

The shop will fill much of the square opposite Argos while a covered walkway around Dolland & Aitchison will be removed.

The raised square will also be changed to a gentle slope, while walkways will be resurfaced and lighting improved.

The café and bakery chainstore will offer muffins, cakes, slices, cheesecakes and cookies baked on the premises every day along with sandwiches, wraps, toasties, paninis and quiche.

Work on a new two-storey M&Co store opposite WHSmith and Thomson Travel is also underway as building work restarted this week following the Christmas break.

The latest work is part of a £4m scheme to improve the shopping precinct which will be renamed St Andrew's Square.

However, shoppers will not be able to take advantage of the new stores until the Autumn, even though the work was originally supposed to be completed in July.

Mike Tyler, of Kandahar Real Estates which owns the centre, said: "While these works are bound to cause some minor disruption for shoppers, we believe that the improved facilities will create an exciting new shopping facility for everyone in Droitwich."

He added the delay was due to the time it took to obtain revised planning permission and to enable all new units to be pre-let.
