A TEENAGER has been seriously injured following a collision between a car and a van near Hereford.

The driver of the car was trapped in his vehicle for nearly an hour and a half after the collision occurred on the A438 near to Staunton on Wye at around 8.15am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service received a number of emergency calls and an ambulance, a senior ambulance officer and two BASICS Doctors were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Divisional Commander Malcolm Price, who attended the incident, said: "On arrival at the scene, crews found a car and a small van that had been in a collision and both sustained extensive damage.

"The driver of the car, a 19 year old man, had suffered multiple injuries in the collision and was extensively trapped in his vehicle.

"The Fire Service and ambulance staff worked together to ensure the patient was freed from the wreckage as quickly as possible whilst receiving the best possible treatment.

"The man had suffered a suspected fractured pelvis, extensive crush injuries to his legs and a broken arm."

After almost 90 minutes of being trapped in the vehicle the man was released and stabilised before he was taken to Hereford County Hospital by ambulance for further assessment and treatment.

The man driving the van involved in the collision was not injured but Mr Price said he was shaken up by the collision.
