THE collective noun for scarecrows is a gathering and that’s exactly what organisers of St Peter’s first scarecrow festival are hoping to see around the parish at the end of August.
Festival organiser and local resident Georgina Hopkinson got the idea from her home village of Ackworth in West Yorkshire.
“Ackworth held its first Scarecrow Festival in 2020 in order to bring the village together when everyone was in lockdown due to the pandemic. Although it had never been held before over 200 scarecrows were created!”
The idea is that during August local residents will create their own scarecrow which will be displayed in their front garden.
Information on how to make a scarecrow will be available on the St Peter’s Festival Facebook Page @StPetersFestival. Residents will be able to enter the festival by emailing with their name, address and a photo of the scarecrow.
A map of St Peter’s will be available on the festival page and will be updated with the location of all the entries enabling local residents to go out and view them.
Judging will take place over the holiday weekend at the end of August and prizes will be awarded to the best entries.
“As we’ve never held a scarecrow festival before there’s no theme and we’re looking forward to seeing how creative people are with their entries” added Georgina.
