AN oak tree believed to be around 200 years old had to be cut down in Claines for a very unusual reason.
The crown of the tree, which is about 60ft tall, began to split causing the tree to shed a large number of its branches.
Council workers were called to the oak on the Rec playing fields in Cornmeadow Lane on Saturday.
The crown splitting in half was the result of a growth defect it developed early in its life - a very rare things for oaks.
A Worcester City Council spokesman said: “On Saturday morning the city council arranged for emergency remedial works to be undertaken to the oak tree at the Rec playing fields in Cornmeadow Road after being informed of a significant number of branches having fallen to the ground.
"Closer inspection confirmed that the tree’s crown had split in half.
"Following works being carried out, the tree was left in a safe condition on Saturday and officers have returned today to remove the remaining debris.”
