A WORCESTER councillor has called for electrical checks and repairs following Pope Iron Road's brush with disaster "to be as pain free and as short as possible".
A pub and several homes on a Worcester road were perilously close to going up in smoke after a worker ripped through electricity mains outside on Monday afternoon.
Properties on the same side as the The Winning Post were left without power or gas from 4pm on Monday until the early hours on Tuesday.
The pub had it worse with the electrical surge melting wires, blowing appliances and creating a burnt plastic stench throughout the building that had only been refurbished during lockdown.
Councillor Karen Lewing was on the scene on Monday and has been assured that landlord Jim McKeever and residents of affected homes will be compensated.
But she wants swift action, particularly on the back of being told that locals had not be informed of the underground works that caused the problem.
“The people on Pope Iron Road were supposed to get letters from Western Power but none of the residents I spoke to got one, nor did anyone I spoke to on Waterworks Road,” she said.
“The first time people saw it was when I posted about it on social media and when the signs went up on the road.
“These people are living across the road from a building site, then the road gets closed, then they get their electricity and gas cut off so you have to feel for them.
“I’d like to see a resolution so the residents can get back to normal as soon as possible, to make sure their houses and electrical equipment are safe,”
“Some of their boards have been shot. I used to live on Waterworks Road and when we bought our house it didn’t have an earth, we don’t know what situation some of these houses are in.
“I am sure they are all getting to get top-notch electrical equipment once this is sorted but those people are having to go through it. I just want it to be as pain free and as short as possible.
“I am keeping an eye on it and I felt so sorry for the pub. They would have made an absolute killing on Tuesday with the England game being on.
"I hope they get properly compensated and that people pop along and support the landlord after such a tough time."
