MULTI-MILLION-POUND work to build a new supermarket in the city has started.
The work will see a new Lidl supermarket built on part of the JVM Castings site off Droitwich Road.
Contractor Benniman Construction are now on site working on the first phase which will see JVM's car park moved and rebuilt to make way for the new supermarket.
The work is expected to take around 10 months with the new store opening next summer.
Around 40 full and part time jobs would be created.
Paul Jagroop, director at Ashfield Land, said: “With so much uncertainty around because of Covid, it’s excellent to be pressing the button on an important and significant investment for Worcester.
"This is an ideal example of Ashfield Land delivering regeneration through smart land use and committed partnering.
"Working with JVM and Lidl GB – and supported by an excellent design, planning and construction team – we’re transforming this site into an asset for the city and something fit for the future.”
As part of the plan by Ashfield Land, which received planning permission last year, a small underused part of the casting specialists' factory would be demolished and move its staff car park to the side to make way for the new supermarket.
This would be the city’s third Lidl with stores already open in Blackpole and Newtown Road.
The 2,200 square metre supermarket would include a bakery and self-service checkouts.
A 110-space car park including six disabled bays and eight parent and child spaces would also be built.
The existing car park to the front of JVM Castings would be moved to the side and a total of 125 car parking spaces would be provided for the factory.
Rachel Hargreaves, regional head of property at Lidl, said: “There’s been much anticipation for this new Lidl store and it’s great that we are now in a position to break ground and start construction.
"We are extremely grateful for all the support that we have received so far and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”
Karl Murcott, director at JVM Castings, said: “Worcester is our home and this reorganisation and regeneration of the site will guarantee our future here for many years to come.
"The scheme allows us to upgrade our site and face forwards with confidence.”
