THE body of a 93-year-old woman has been found in a popular Worcester park.

Police and ambulances were called to the Northwick Lodge playing field, off Northwick Road, after a dog walker discovered the woman at 1.50pm yesterday.

Officers taped off the park's entrances while paramedics attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate her.

The woman has not been named, but police said she was from the local area.

Concerned residents watched as the woman's body was carried away from the recreation ground, which is well-used by dog walkers and youngsters.

Jill Weaver, of Northwick Road, said: "I saw hordes of police cars and every point of access to the lodge was cordoned off or had a policeman standing there.

"Two ambulances came and I saw the body taken away in a body bag.

"I got back at about 1.40pm and within the next hour they had sorted it and cleared everything. They were very quick.

"There were about eight police cars and paramedics and two ambulances."

Godfrey Harvey, also of Northwick Road, said: "I suddenly noticed a lot of action and the whole field was cordoned off. There was a policeman at each exit.

"They were obviously stopping anyone going on the park at all.

"A dog walker told me it was a lady walking her dog and she was in the middle of the field.

The police and paramedics did whatever was necessary, but they couldn't revive her. It's a great shame."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said staff received a call at 2.02pm and sent an ambulance, incident support officer and community first responder, who found the 93-year-old.

The body was later taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital mortuary.

A police spokesman said officers were currently treating it as an unexplained death.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out today.
