IT was a busy week in court from a trio of murderers sentenced to life behind bars to a drunk man jailed for sexually assaulting a woman in her city home.

We also carried a story about a drug user trying to hide cannabis in an intimate part of her body during a search at Worcester Police Station, a vile thug spitting in a police officer's face while claiming to have Covid-19 and a homeless man who, quite by accident, came very close to burning down one of the University of Worcester's more significant buildings.

Mohammed Saddam Hussain, Adam Carpenter and Faisel Fiaz have each been jailed for life after the murder of Colton Bryan at his home in Redditch in July last year.

The 22-year-old was attacked in his flat in Guinness Close, Redditch, in July last year, and died at the scene from stab wounds. During the trial it was revealed the stabbing involved a large hunting knife nine inches long. Mohammed Hammed Hussain, the brother of Mohammed Saddam Hussain, left the country, boarding the first available flight to Pakistan after the stabbing.

Hussain, 24, of Oakfield Avenue, Birmingham, was given a life sentence with a minimum of 24 and a half years.

He was also handed a 10-year sentence for conspiracy to rob and a three-year sentence for perverting the course of justice.

These will run concurrent to his life sentence.

21 year-old Carpenter, of Wharrington Hill, Redditch, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in addition to 11 years for conspiracy to rob again.

This will also run concurrent to his life sentence.

Fiaz, 21, of Millsbro Road, Redditch, was given a life sentence with a minimum of 23 years. Read the story here.

Other cases of note included that of a drunken sex attacker groped a married woman's thighs after entering her Worcester home uninvited. His behaviour led to stern words from Worcester's most senior judge who warned he would jail city men who took advantage of women.

Darren Jones admitted sexual assault on the 'vulnerable woman' in Worcester, kissing her head and stroking her upper thighs in front of her husband as she - and her partner - pleaded with him to stop.

Judge James Burbidge QC, the Recorder of Worcester and the city's most senior judge, condemned the actions of such men, issuing his jail warning against the background of the murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard who disappeared after walking home in Clapham in London on March 3. Christian Fielding admitted arson on a reckless basis after he discarded a smouldering cigarette butt in a burger box in a bin next to the Jenny Lind Building, in Farrier Street, part of the university.

It was accepted by Judge James Burbidge QC who sentenced him at Worcester Crown Court this week that Fielding, who had himself been a victim of arson, did not start the blaze deliberately.

The 48-year-old had also already served seven months on remand, the equivalent of a 14 month prison sentence, a longer jail term than he would have received had he been dealt with sooner. As a result he walked free from the court after completing paperwork in the cells. Read the full story here.

Koura Freely took drastic measures to hide her 1g stash of cannabis after she was arrested for an assault which led to the search at Worcester Police Station, hiding the drugs in her vagina, telling officers the drugs were 'a tampon'.

One of the stories which stirred a lot of strong feelings was that of Jerraldo Collins who spat in a police officer's face, claiming he had Covid-19. He will now be kept on a tighter leash having been made subject to a criminal behaviour order.
