THE news that a former city department store will become an artisan food hall and indoor farmers' market has evoked a hugely positive response from our readers.

Yesterday we announced Hammonds of Hull are working alongside Artisan Food Hall Limited to bring their 'unique dining experience' to the city to the former Debenham's store in the high street.

The story was read online over 7,000 times and residents expressed their joy at the news in the comment section.

Andrew Graham said: "Brilliant idea. Great way to support the local economy and to draw people into town.

"I get despondent at times over just how many things I can't get in Worcester at the moment. Like fresh fish for example. Would love it to include a fish monger."

Kayleigh Taylor commented: "This is a brilliant idea if it happens.

"What a great way to help the economy and in a way that I would absolutely enjoy shopping for my food."

Cherrie Mansfield said: "I'm excited. It's about time Worcester had more locally sourced food on offer. I can't wait to see how this develops."

Tom Piotrowski added: "Excellent. It’s so much better for Worcester becoming carbon neutral by 2030 too with more locally sourced produce and less overseas made clothes."

The nine month construction works to transform the High Street department store will commence shortly.

Once finished the store is expected to house an artisanal food hall and community led farmers market over three or four floors which will also include music, arts and creative spaces.

Debenhams permanently closed its doors earlier this year. The chain shut all 124 of its UK stores, a process that started in December 2020, with the final nail in the coffin administered by a takeover by online-only retailer Boohoo.
