AN EDUCATION head has welcomed the Government’s decision for teachers to determine final exam grades this year for secondary school pupils amid the pandemic.
Keith Metcalfe, headmaster at Malvern College, said: “We are pleased that the Government is placing its trust in the professional judgement of our teachers to produce the assessed grades for our pupils.
The government has announced that grades will be based on mock exam and coursework performance, with the final overall grade being issued early to give a longer timeframe for GCSE and A Level teenagers to appeal decisions.
Mr Metcalfe added:“A successful online programme and excellent sets of results means we will have a range of high quality data for our pupils on which to base their grades.”
Last year, severe criticism of what Boris Johnson later dubbed ‘a mutant algorithm’ to predict grades led to a U-turn.
