POLICE have said a "violent incident" took place before a wrong-way truck hit three men.

The injured men, who suffered serious leg injuries, were taken to hospital after the incident that happened in Crossway Green, Stourport, at 10.45pm on Friday night.

Police have now clarified there was a violent incident before the truck went down the wrong way of the A449, hit the men, and took off before being abandoned nearby.

A police spokesman said the specifics of the violent incident were being examined as part of the wider investigation into the truck incident.

The spokesman said: "No arrests have been made regarding the incident in Crossway Green, the investigation is still ongoing and we are still appealing for witnesses."

The spokesman provided no update on the condition of the men.

Police had previously said the three men were with a woman and had arrived in the area in a blue Ford before the incident, in which an unknown silver coloured vehicle was also involved.

On Saturday there was a heavy police presence at the scene and officers cordoned off a section of the southbound carriageway, before the turn off for the Travelodge.

Forensic officers could be seen loading items onto a white van, while there were a number of police vehicles, and the road was reduced to one lane to passing traffic.

There was also police activity on the other side of the carriageway with a vehicle spotted being loaded onto a car carrier trailer.

Yesterday a resident of Narroway Lane, which was close to where police were over the weekend, said he believed police moved on on Sunday, but had missed what happened on Friday night.

Other neighbours were not at home, and the nearby Travelodge and Royal Spice Indian restaurant were closed.

There were no police vehicles in the area on Monday afternoon, and all that was left were tyre marks on the grass, on the side of the A449.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: “We believe a passing motorist stopped to help at the incident and we are keen to speak to them and any other witnesses.”
