THE city’s coronavirus infection rate has surged as the number of cases recorded in a week increased for the eighth week in a row.

Worcester’s infection rate increased to 216.4 cases per 100,000 people in the week up to November 5 with 219 positive cases recorded compared to 150.2 per 100,000 people in the previous week.

The infection rate has increased from nine per 100,000 people in the week up to September 9 passing an infection rate of 55 on September 30, then passing 100 in mid-October before rising to 157 in the week up to October 28.

The city’s infection rate then passed 200 increasing to 211.4 per 100,000 people on November 4.

The infection rate also continued to increase in every other part of the county except for Malvern Hills.

The figures show how the infection rates in Worcestershire grew in the week up to a second national lockdown with the latest numbers showing the state of the county as tougher restrictions officially started.

Redditch’s infection rate saw a massive increase to 295.6 cases per 100,000 people recorded in the week making it the highest rate in the county.

Redditch’s infection rate increased to 190 per 100,000 people in the previous week with 162 cases recorded.

Wyre Forest’s infection rate increased to 262.2 per 100,000 people in the week up to November 5 compared to 164.9 a week earlier.

The number of cases recorded was 266 compared to 167 a week earlier.

The infection rate also increased in Bromsgrove to 210.3 in the week – falling slightly from 219.2 earlier in the week – compared to 199.2 a week earlier.

A total of 210 cases were recorded in Bromsgrove during the week compared to 199 in the previous week.

The infection rate in Wychavon was 150.7 with 195 cases compared to 119 per 100,000 people a week earlier when 154 cases were recorded.

Malvern’s infection rate was 118.2 per 100,000 people with 93 cases recorded in the seven days compared to 104.2 cases per 100,000 people and 82 cases a week earlier.

The infection rate for Worcestershire was 205.9 per 100,000 people, according to the latest figures, with a total of 1,227 positive cases recorded during the week.

The number of cases recorded in Worcestershire during the whole pandemic is 7,831 - of which 1,328 have been recorded in Worcester. A total of 1,394 cases have been recorded in Wychavon and 736 have been recorded in Malvern Hills.

Bromsgrove has recorded 1,704 cases, 1,301 have been recorded in Redditch and 1,368 in Wyre Forest.
