A DISABLED man is not happy with his “third party” apology following an incident at a Post Office.

William Stavert, 61, from Malvern visited Great Malvern Post Office on Thursday with his hearing dog, Archie, but the pair were told to leave the shop as no dogs are allowed, despite Archie wearing insignia showing that he is an assistance dog.

When Mr Stavert contacted the paper, our reporter received a letter apologising for the “misunderstanding” from the Post Office.

However, Mr Stavert said: “I am still not happy with the Post Office statement apologised through third party without direct apologise to me.”

A Post Office spokesperson has since said: “We would like to sincerely apologise for this incident and the misunderstanding. The branch was unfortunately unaware that the customer is deaf and that the dog is a special hearing dog.

"We are very sorry for any distress caused to the customer. We have spoken to the branch and given guidance on how to identify any person with an assistance dog as they can use any of our Post Offices.

"We hope to welcome Mr Stavert back to our Great Malvern branch as soon as possible.

“The branch did apologise to the sister of the customer when the misunderstanding came to light.”

When Mr Stavert visited his local branch, he said the woman behind the counter was "muffled " making it "impossible" for him to lip-read because she was wearing a face mask.

He also pointed out a sticker on the door outside showing that assistance dogs are allowed but he was still not understood.

The experience left the pair feeling "very shaken" and he even used a phone app called BIG to help him communicate with staff but he was "shooed" out of the building.
