A DISGUSTED Worcester shopper says she was shocked when she found what she describes as human faeces in a frequently used city centre alleyway.
The woman, who did not wish to be named publicly, told the Worcester News she was walking down the Shambles Entry path next to Marks and Spencer in the High Street when she made the gruesome discovery.
She said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw all the human faeces in the alleyway. I think it is disgraceful and could pose a risk to human health. The smell is hideous.
“It has been an issue before. Something must be done.”
The maintenance of Shambles Entry is the responsibility of the Worcester City Council, however the doorways that back on to the alleyway belong to Marks and Spencer.
A spokesman for Worcester City Council said: “The street cleansing team went down yesterday to clean and sweep the alleyway and they confirmed this morning that everything has been removed.
“There was, however, some waste in the alcove by the loading doors but this space is the responsibility of Marks and Spencer.
“We have spoken with them and they have agreed it is up to them to sort out and they will be hiring contractors to clear the mess.
“We have also been in touch with the lady who made the complaint to reassure her that the alleyway is now clean.”
City councillor Lynn Denham encouraged residents to always report such matters to the authority.
She said: “Although this is not something that has been reported to me personally I would advise anyone who sees something like this to report it to the council immediately.
“You can report street cleansing issues via the the city council website or by phone.”
