THE county of Worcestershire has produced a lot of musical talent over the years.

From 19th century composers to rock legends, some iconic names in music owe some of their upbringing and life to the regions.

Here are just five iconic names and bands that were born and bred in the region- did we miss any off the list? Let us know in the comments.

Harry Styles

Harry found fame on the TV talent show, The X Factor.

Together with Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, they formed the band One Direction.

This band found world-wide fame, producing hit songs such as the What Makes You Beautiful and Story Of My Life.

Outside of One Direction, he has also gone on to lead a successful solo career.

Watermelon Sugar and Falling are two popular tracks he has produced as a solo artist.

However, did you know that the lead singer and frontman was actually born Redditch?

He was born in Alexandra Hospital, a fact confirmed by no-one other than his own father back in 2013.

John Taylor and Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran

Duran Duran were a popular 80s band with hit songs such as Girls On Film and Hungry Like the Wolf.

According to the Official Charts, the band had 30 UK top 40s during their career.

The iconic band has links to Worcestershire, as the pair lived in Hollywood Village and they clearly haven’t forgotten about their roots.

John Taylor also went to The Abbey High School (now Trinity High School) in Redditch, where he opened up a £200,000 music suite back in 2012.

Sir Edward Elgar

Edward Elgar was a famous composer born in 1857.

He was born and bred just fifteen minutes away from Worcester in Broadheath.

Sir Elgar is best known for writing the music to the patriotic British song ‘Land of Hope and Glory’.

Locals might have spotted the statue that was erected in honour of Sir Edward Elgar in Cathedral Square.

John Bonham from Led Zeppelin

You might recognise John Bonham as the drummer from the iconic rock band, Led Zepplin- and he actually hails from Redditch.

This rock band rose to fame in the 70s and were known for their songs ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Stairway to Heaven’.

John Bonham has a lot of links to the Worcestershire area. He was born at No.84 Birchfield Road, Headless Cross and he went to Wilton House School on Worcester Road.

Sadly, John passed away in 1980 at the age of 32.

In 2018, a statue was erected in John’s name to celebrate what would have been his 70th birthday- you might have passed it if you have ever been to Redditch.

Traffic was a rock band formed in 1967; fans will recognise hits such as ‘The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys’ and ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy’.

However, did you know that Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi, were actually born in Worcestershite?

Jim Hails from Evesham while Dave was born in Worcester.

Before joining Traffic, the pair actually formed their own band called The Hellions who toured around the U.K.

Jim Capaldi passed away in 2005 after a battle with stomach cancer.

Earlier this year, a blue plaque was erected on the wall of Evesham’s Public Hall to commemorate his life.
