RESIDENTS near a main road say they are being plagued by boy racers who make their lives hell and leave them in constant fear.

One woman decided to speak out after her husband was knocked down by one of the vehicles at the organised meet on Kidderminster Road in Droitwich.

She said: “We have been plagued by organised racing meets for several years.

“Almost every weekend over fifty cars congregate outside Big Bear Plastics and the island by DFS. Then a select few cars race between the two islands.

“The noise is horrendous, screeching, revving and backfiring. You can hear it across the whole town.

“They wake residents up that need to work, children, dogs and disturb the peace. In all honesty they are making our lives hell.”

The resident told the Worcester News the most recent car meets were on Friday and again on Saturday.

She continued: “When there were two meets in the space of three days, my husband and I decided we had had enough. My partner works shifts and needs to sleep in the evening. The noise means he is having two hours sleep and then going to work. It is ruining our lives.

“So he went to confront them. They scattered when they saw us but kept calling me a “Karen.” One of them drove past my husband and ended up knocking him to the floor. He has a mark on his head and his arm.

“It was really scary, we are all really scared. There have been threats and repercussions from the groups. People have put nails in the road outside our home and cars have been vandalised. We feel so powerless.”

According to the residents they have made multiple calls to the police about the meet ups but don’t feel like they are being taken seriously.

“We call the police every time the racers come back, but it takes at times up to an hour for them to respond due to staffing.

“The police then arrive with blue lights on, the lookouts report back and the meet scatters, no one is arrested, no cars are seized, and the perpetrators organise the next meet.

“I have been to the police, the local councillors and the Safer Road Partnership. Now I am coming to you because we don’t know what else to do. We just want our community to be safe again.”

A second resident added: “I regularly hear them over the weekend during 10-11pm onwards with my bedroom windows shut however I have never witnessed what I saw on Friday at 11pm returning from a meal with family.

“From Big bear, down the carriageway to the Westlands island I would say there was around 100 spectators watching and cheering on the cars that were participating.

“We approached the island coming back from Kidderminster way and it was almost blocked with cars which my partner had to carefully move around to get past.

“All down the carriageway cars were parked up and some cars speeding down the carriageway one of which dangerously cut us up and my sister in the vehicle in front of us.

“This continued around the Westlands island with cars racing past very dangerously having no consideration or thought for other drivers on the road.

“My mother was in the back of our car and was frightened for my young daughter who was also in the back of the car, we felt there was going to be an accident.”

Worcestershire local policing chief inspector, Gareth Morgan, said: “We are aware of the concerns from our community over the periodic anti-social driving within the area.

“Our Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team is working with our specialist road policing unit and multiagency partners in actively seeking a solution to address the concerns of the community. I would also like to discourage members of the public from watching from the side of the roads to avoid any potential dangers to themselves.
