A NEW zebra crossing will finally be installed on a busy city road.
Worcestershire County Council has said it will install the new crossing between the Oak Avenue and Poplar Avenue junctions of Brickfields Road in Worcester following several calls by local residents and Labour ward councillors for a safer crossing.
The work will take place between Tuesday, September 1 and Friday, September 11.
The crossing will provide a safer place for many elderly and disabled residents who have struggled to cross the road safely for many years and faced trouble trying to walk to and from shops, the post office and bus stops.
Councillor Paul Denham, who represents Rainbow Hill Division on Worcestershire County Council, said he had long been calling for a better and safer crossing on the busy road and welcomed the news.
“I have been asking for better crossings on Brickfields Road for a long time," he said.
"This is a very busy road with fast-moving traffic and local residents, especially the elderly and disabled, find it dangerous to cross to and from the shops, post office, bus stop, Brickfields Park and the King George V Community Hub.
"Ideally, we also need a second crossing at the top of the hill but I am delighted that funds have been made available for this new zebra crossing.”
Councillor Adrian Gregson, who also represents also Rainbow Hill on Worcester City Council, said the new crossing was much-needed in the area and safety for residents - particularly the elderly and disabled - had been a real problem.
“Residents have been telling me for a long time that we need safe crossing for pedestrians to key routes into the city centre such as Brickfields Road," he said.
"Road safety in the area has been a real problem and I’m very pleased that following hard work from your local Labour councillors we will now be having this new zebra crossing installed, which is a really positive step in the right direction."
