SIR – In Councillor Chris Mitchell’s letter in response to a widespread call for a cycle rack to be placed opposite the Museum and Art Gallery, he questions whether there is a need for a cycle rack here (Bike rack– is there a need? June 1).
He refers to the fact that there are other cycle racks elsewhere in the city – only 150m away. He is also concerned that the proposed cycle rack would lead to the loss of two short-term parking bays.
What Cllr Mitchell fails to understand is that the very same argument can be used to call for the removal of car parking spaces opposite the museum. There are lots of other car parking spaces nearby, so why the need for these two car parking bays?
Many more people are now cycling and they will need safe places to park their bikes. This one cycle rack can hold 10 bikes, for the loss of just two car parking spaces.
There are thousands of parking spaces in Worcester, but far fewer cycle racks. Providing more cycle parking should not be seen as an attack on car drivers, but rather as an opportunity to provide a real choice for those travelling into Worcester.
This is not to mention all the health and environmental reasons to promote cycling.
