A MUM has praised the midwives at Worcestershire Royal Hospital for their ‘fantastic’ attitude during the coronavirus crisis.

Gemma Walton has thanked the hospital staff after they delivered her premature baby, Florence Scaife, during the pandemic.

Miss Walton, from Clifton upon Teme, near Worcester, said: “It was strange being in hospital after just having a baby with no visitors allowed in.

“As I was in hospital for quite a long time without any visitors it could’ve felt quite lonely, but the staff were very attentive.

“Every day was a positive experience there.

"If it wasn’t for them being so cheerful it would’ve been a difficult experience.

“Their attitude was amazing, and everyone was so caring.”

Miss Walton, aged 32, added: “Because the staff were so friendly and helpful it made the experience a lot less stressful.

“They were fantastic. With everything going on at the moment I am so grateful for the NHS.

“There was a lot of one to one support and it was a very welcoming environment.

“The staff would come in and have a chat with me about anything and you could have a laugh with them – it was almost like I became friends with them.

“What I found was that you got to know the staff that came in which was a lot more personal.”

Florence was born at 35 weeks and was put in intensive care for 24 hours.

The birth was brought forward as Florence stopped growing at 33 weeks.

The pair were then transferred to the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) for extra support.

The mum-of-two was in the TCU ward for seven days after she spent two days in the antenatal ward before she had a caesarean.

The little girl was born 4lb 9oz on March 29 and Miss Walton was discharged from hospital on April 12.
