AN outdoor play area will officially open to students after a man cycled 1,100 miles to raise money for the equipment.
Lloyd Wilkes took part in the challenge to mark his 50th birthday, while raising money to support Martley C of E Primary School’s project to build a play area on its neglected forest school.
Following the epic ride, he raised £1,100 which was spent on the school’s project.
Mr Wilkes, aged 51, said: “I was going to do the cycle ride to mark my 50th birthday. I also had an idea to raise money for charity.
“I have done events previously for Cancer Research UK but I wanted to help a more local cause this time.”
He added: “A forest school is something I believe in. I live in the countryside, so I know how important it is to get kids outdoors.
“I want the children to have fun and learn practical skills in the outdoors and get away from computers.
“The old play area was outdated, and they needed a new one. I thought the money would be well spent there.”
Mr Wilkes cycled from John O Groats to Lands’ End from May 1 to May 21 last year.
The school's play area in Martley will officially open to its students on Tuesday, March 17.
Lucy Cox, headteacher, said: "We are incredibly lucky for the generous donations received from Lloyd's epic bike ride and from Knightwick Parish Council.
“The money contributed has funded a large proportion of the total cost of the new climbing frame which will benefit not only the children at Martley CE Primary School but also children from other local schools who attend our holiday club.
“Lloyd has worked tirelessly on this project and we are grateful for his energy and enthusiasm.”
The space will provide a specialised section for the children which will include a mud kitchen, bug hotels, fire pit, overalls and an orchard.
Mr Wilkes completed the ride solo - he carried a tent with him on his bike throughout the journey.
He camped wild and stayed in hostels throughout the 20 days.
Mr Wilkes cycled 65 miles on average a day – but on the first day of the ride he cycled 90 miles.
