STAFF who offers schoolchildren the opportunity to develop their personal skills have been praised and nominated for an award.

Training staff from the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at King’s School Worcester, in College Green, have been nominated for Support Staff of the Year.

The CCF is a co-curricular club at the school which offers an Army and Royal Air Force section.

Adult staff must attend many courses, including weapon training and first aid courses, which will then authorise them to teach the cadets.

A cadet is supported in the improvement of self-discipline and self-confidence through taking part in a variety of activities.

Paul Harding, who nominated the staff, said: “The adult staff of the cadet force, based at the school, give over 100 per cent to ensure the cadets are fully trained to the Army Proficiency Certificate (The APC star system).

“This is done by the adults volunteering their time and effort to qualify on the various courses to teach the cadets and chaperone them to the many competitions, camps and visits to enable them to excel in their chosen co-curricular club.

“The adult staff also have to plan and conduct training and camps by giving up their time and giving over 100 per cent effort and enthusiasm for them to run smoothly.

“What the adult training staff have to do is huge and only committed and enthusiastic characters have allowed it to succeed over the past 100 years.”

Mr Harding added: “Their hard work has paid off over the years with the unit winning many competitions for drill, shooting and the well sought-after Military Skills Competition.

“This competition has been won by the school cadet force four times in the row.”

The skills the staff instil include confidence, self-reliance, respect, loyalty, commitment, self-discipline, teamwork and time keeping abilities.

The Worcestershire Education Awards, run jointly between Worcester University and the Worcester News, celebrates excellence in teaching and training across the county.

The deadline for award nominations is April 18.

Finalists are chosen by a panel of judges and winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at the University Arena in Worcester on June 20.
