On Saturday March 14, François Girard’s new production of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) will be screened Live in HD across the world.
And the good news is, Malvern Theatres will be one of the locations.
The great bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel returns to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since 2012 to sing the title role of the cursed sea captain doomed to sail the open ocean for eternity.
A spokesman said: “With sweeping sets by John Macfarlane, Girard’s
new production turns the Met stage into a rich, layered tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting.
“German soprano Anja Kampe makes her Met debut as the devoted
Senta, whose selfless love is what the Dutchman seeks; bass Franz-Josef Selig is her father Daland; and tenor Sergey Skorokhodov is her deserted former lover, Erik. Valery Gergiev conducts.”
The spokesman added: “Wagner’s diary, written in Norway when taking refuge from a storm while en route from Riga to Paris, was a major source of inspiration for Girard’s production.
“Girard and his team visited the villages and surrounding fjords where Wagner was sheltering during the storm and incorporated the same landscapes that Wagner described along with the rocks, costumes, sailors and fishermen as the scenic backdrop of this new production.”
“Our mission” Girard said “is to capture the essence of a piece, try to make it resonate for an audience and in here is the complete obsession for a ghost, a portrait, another world.”
