THE New Year has got off to a joyful start for Worcestershire families who welcomed their newborns on the first day of 2020.

And this year it was girls who dominated.

First to enter the world at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in the new decade was baby girl Beatrice Edgar.

Beatrice was born at 2.18am and weighed 6.2 lbs.

The baby’s name was inspired from the character Beatrice Franklin from the BBC drama series Call The Midwife.

Her 25-year-old mum, Eleanor Edgar, from Bidford, said: “My husband likes Call The Midwife.

“It turns out I have two great grandmas called Beatrice which I didn’t know about.

“I found out this morning which was a nice surprise.”

The first-time mum added: “It’s surreal at the moment becoming a mum.

“It’s the best start to the new year.

“We hadn’t got anything planned - we don’t normally do much for new year so now we have a birthday to celebrate instead.”

Baby Beatrice arrived a little earlier than expected as she was due on January 5.

Among the proud parents celebrating in the hospital’s delivery suite were also the Droitwich couple, Annabel and Liam Hine, who will be bringing home their first newborn.

Eadie May Hine was born on January 1 at 5.33am.

Mrs Hine, aged 31 said: “It feels amazing, it’s surreal.

“We liked the name Eadie, we like old fashioned names.

“Her middle name is May and that’s after my nan.”

Mrs Hine added: “It’s a nice way of going into the new year.”

Mr Hine, aged 36, said: “I haven’t been to sleep since 5am yesterday morning.

“It was a long labour. It was about 19 hours and then it was an emergency caesarean.

“It was quite scary.”

Eadie May was born weighing 8.4 lbs. She came slightly early as she was due on Thursday, January 9.
