WORCESTER Cathedral was packed for the popular Worcester News Christmas Carol Service on Friday evening.

Everyone was in fine voice and got into the festive spirit for the annual tradition that marks the start of the Christmas celebrations for many.

The popular service, held on the Friday before Christmas each year, raises money for Worcester Cathedral Music Fund.

Among those who attended the much-loved event held in the spectacular cathedral setting were local dignitaries, churchgoers, readers and Worcester News staff.

The event began with Worcester Cathedral Choir entering and singing Once In Royal David’s City, before the whole congregation then joined in.

There were readings from Julia Lancett, managing director of Newsquest Midlands South, Worcester News’ editor Michael Purton and Parveen Akhtar, the daughter of the Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Allah Ditta.

During the evening, the congregation enjoyed singing festive favourites including Silent Night, Good King Wenceslas and O Come All Ye Faithful.

Mr Purton said: “The Worcester News Christmas Carol Service has always been immensely popular with around 1,000 people filling the cathedral, and it makes us proud to be able to bring the city together in this way for such a traditional celebration.

“It was another truly enjoyable start to the festive season.

“We wish all our readers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.”

The hour-long free concert has become a firm favourite and grown in popularity over the years, with readers quickly snapping up tickets in the run up to the event, ensuring there isn’t a spare seat in the house on the night
