WORCESTER MP Robin Walker has written to the UK chief executive of Burger King to make them aware of a campaign to bring a branch of the fast food restaurant to the city.
The ‘People of Worcester want a Burger King’ Facebook page was launched at the beginning of the month and already has over 2000 followers, with its aim to get the Whopper eatery to open up shop here.
Barry Bozward launched the page and runs it with fellow burger lover Craig Smith and told the Worcester News yesterday he was delighted Mr Walker had got involved.
Mr Bozward, 39, said: “We wrote to Robin to raise more awareness but we have been in touch with Burger King through social media before. It all helps with our end goal.”
He added that the campaign hopes to also bring about a Worcester Whopper, which would be flavoured with Lea and Perrins sauce.
Mr Walker’s caseworker Kathryn Powell informed Mr Bozward and Mr Smith via letter on Monday that the MP has agreed to write to the chief executive to “make him aware of your campaign”.
However, she emphasised that he does not have any involvement over planning applications and cannot endorse one chain over another.
Rather, it will simply enable the company “to consider the support in any future business decisions”.
Speaking to the Worcester News, Mr Walker said while he was not part of the campaign, he was happy to “highlight” the group, adding: “I’m always interested in getting business investment in the city.”
Asked what his favourite menu choice is, he said: "I have not had a Burger King for a while now, but I have to say I’m quite partial to a Bacon Double Cheeseburger."
Mr Bozward joked: "Once we finish with this campaign, we could look at Wagamama to set up shop next."
