‘Party must unite behind new Prime Minister' says Worcester MP Robin Walker

Voting for the Tory leader by the party membership finished yesterday, and Jeremy Hunt or Boris Johnson will be announced as PM this morning. Theresa May’s successor will then move into Downing Street tomorrow.

Mr Walker, who has not said who he is supporting, said it was set to be a busy week in Parliament this week.

“I look forward to seeing what the new PM will say in their speech at Downing Street, I will want to see what they want to do,” the MP said.

“It is clear there is going to be cabinet changes.”

On Monday, Sir Alan Duncan quit as a foreign office minister in protest against a possible Boris Johnson victory, and a no deal outcome this October. Mr Walker said that news had come as no surprise.

“It is no secret they (Mr Johnson and Mr Duncan) have not gone on,” he said.

“But it is always better to get on with the job, and wait and see what happens. It is a little unfair (to assume Mr Johnson wants no deal) as like Jeremy he has said he would want to leave with a deal.

"I have always said I would have preferred the deal to have been voted for. People are fed up with how long it has taken and businesses are not happy with the uncertainty.”

Mr Walker said he was hopeful the EU and the UK could get back round the table and agree a new deal before October’s deadline, but conceded that would not be easy.

On whether he was hopeful of a promotion to the new cabinet, Mr Walker instead said he expected the candidate he originally backed, Sajid Javid, to get a senior position.

The county MP and Home Secretary has been tipped to be the new chancellor by some experts.
